+ Website Promotion

Creating a website is one thing. But people often forget that it takes a lot of effort to bring visitors to it. Below we give you some insights and advice.

What is Google PageRank?

The term PageRank comes from one of the founders of Google, Larry Page, and not, as many people think, from the noun “page”.

PageRank is one of the most important algorithms ever developed for the web and is one of the many factors used by Google to determine the best search results. PageRank is calculated on a scale going from 1 to 10, but it is quite easy to get a PageRank 1 for your website.

This only requires a few incoming links. However, to get a step higher you need many more high quality links. The higher your PageRank is, the more high quality incoming links it takes, and the harder it gets to achieve an even better position.

What is Alexa Rank?

Alexa Rank provides information about internet traffic to other websites. These statistics can be found on the Alexa.com website or via a free toolbar, which can be downloaded for Internet Explorer and FireFox. This toolbar shows you the Alexa Rank of every website. The ranking goes from zero to several millions. These statistics actually reflect the traffic statistics of every website. To give an indication about which websites have been frequently visited and are logically high quality, Alexa publishes special lists, such as the top ten most visited websites. The higher the number of visitors to your website, the lower your Alexa Rank will be, and the better and higher quality your website is.

What is Google Adwords?

Google Adwords is a payable service from Google to get better search results for your website. Using Adwords, you can buy the search terms for which you would like your website to be found. So if someone visits Google and searches on one of the terms you have bought, Google will put your advertisement (depending on the price) on top of the page, in order for your website to attract more visitors. Google Adwords are the advertisements you often see on the right hand side or on top of the search results.

What is Google Adsense

Google Adsense is another service from Google, with which you can easily make some money by letting Google place relevant advertisements on your website.

Some advice to increase your number of visitors

Advice 1: Get relevant and high quality links

Achieving different links can be done in many ways. It is important to get relevant and high quality incoming links, such as links from websites which are related to the subject of your own website, and links which have been put on the right places on websites with a certain PageRank. The higher the PageRank, the better. It is advisable to get links from websites with PageRank 4.

Advice 2: Announce your website to search engines

To be sure you get good Google search results it is necessary to appear in the Google index. If you don’t appear here, Google won’t be able to find you. You can do this through a sitemap. For every website it is important to create a sitemap and to announce this to the big search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Live and Ask.

Advice 3: Announce your website to directories

The most well-known directories kept up to date by humans are DMOZ and Yahoo. DMOZ is a directory that is a reliable source for search engines, such as Google, who take the websites mentioned in DMOZ very seriously. This affects the quality and the ranking of a website in a positive way. Websites can be announced for free, but it is quite difficult to be actually placed in this directory. To get into the Yahoo directory on the other hand, a customer needs to pay.

Advice 4: Write a press release

A very easy and good way to attract attention to your website, and get good links, is by using “free publicity” such as press releases. Press releases are news messages you can write yourself in the same layout as you see in newspapers.

Advice 5: Start a newsletter

This can periodically boost the number of visitors to your website. A newsletter also provides "front of mind awareness" with the audience and strongly confirms the reputation of your company.

Advice 6: Communicate your website via personal media

Think about leaflets, email, business cards, etc. Many companies constantly forget to mention their website in emails, which is actually a missed opportunity.
